Understanding “comprehensive afterschool”

According to Afterschool Alliance, in the American Rescue Plan, funds are allocated specifically for “the implementation of evidence-based interventions aimed specifically at addressing learning loss, such as summer learning or summer enrichment, extended day, comprehensive afterschool programs, or extended school year programs.” Many members of the out-of-school time field are familiar with descriptions of “quality afterschool and summer learning programs”—but what is comprehensive afterschool?

Comprehensive afterschool providers follow key principles for expanding learning to support student re-engagement. These principles are:

  • School-community partnerships
  • Active and engaged learning
  • Family engagement
  • Intentional programming
  • Diverse, prepared staff
  • Participation and access
  • Safety
  • Health and well-being
  • Ongoing assessment and improvement
