Looking to enrich your school break programs? CAP is here to help!

We have compiled a list of activities and resources to help grow and improve your school age program. Whether it is at your site, or virtual, the excitement and fun provided from these activities are sure to excite every type of student in your program.

DIGS

DIGS (Developing Individuals, Growing Stewards), a new agriculture curriculum from CSUE 4-H STEM, is a 24-lesson program based on Colorado agriculture, designed to be taught in formal and informal environments to third through fifth-grade students. The action-packed lessons are filled with interactive activities covering a range of topics, from plant health to genetics to basic nutrition. Great for SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS!

4-H extension agents and 4-H STEM AmeriCorps members in counties across Colorado, including Arapahoe, Denver, Garfield, Larimer and Weld counties have compiled a collection of 66 STEM lesson plans perfect to extend STEM learning beyond the classroom this winter! The lesson plans are available in English and Spanish with digital files being sent free of charge. If programs would like a hard copy of the text, Garfield County 4-H is charging $10 for the paper, ink and binders. Interested OST providers can contact Danielle Wesolowski, Garfield County 4-H Agent.

Next Gen STEM

From soil science to coding for wildlife, Eugene Science Center’s Next Gen STEM project offers quick lessons, printable activities and coloring pages profiling the careers of 5 AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassadors. If you are looking for activities to empower the next generation of innovators in your afterschool program, explore the Next Gen STEM Activity Book!

Denver Museum of Nature & Science

Looking to enrich your winter break programs? Consider the Denver Museum of Nature & Science‘s ExciteEd!, educational program. Whether it is at the Museum, at your site, or virtual, youth experience the excitement and fun of nature and science through hands-on learning.

Organized youth groups have free admission to the Museum for self-guided field trips and the museum has extended hours every Friday. Scholarships for paid programs and bus fuel funds are available for qualifying groups.

Dig Into Mining
 

An interactive educational program for students grades 6-12 that uncovers the use of metals such as copper in our everyday life, and provides students a deeper understanding of today’s hard rock mining industry.

4-H Health Rocks

4-H Health Rocks! helps youth say “Yes” to their health! We invite you to use our hands-on learning curriculum in your after-school program to inform, inspire and empower youth to be substance free. Explore our robust library of more than 50 activities on 4-H Health Rocks!

Afterschool Alliance Curriculum

This webpage from Afterschool Alliance provides information and resources on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curriculum and activities for afterschool programs, including resources from 4-H, NASA, and many more.

BOKS Kids

BOKS is a free physical activity program for kids of all ages and abilities. The BOKS program includes lesson plans, training, and support needed to get kids moving for up to 45 minutes a day. It also includes shorter movement breaks, games, and activities tailored to your needs as an educator.

Hour of Code

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Host an “Hour of Code” with your OST program each week with these activities from Code.org!

Mizzen Education

Summer Resource Guide

Developed for the 50 State Afterschool Networks – with leadership from the Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network – to engage and support children and youth nationwide, the Summer Activity Guides are FREE resources available to afterschool providers. Activity batches are provided with supplemental materials to assist in preparing and implementing high-quality summer programs.

Getting to Know the New Summer Activity Guides

This webinar provides participants with an overview of the new Summer Activity Guides. We dive in to the structure and various elements of the activities for each age group so that participants feel comfortable facilitating every component of these lessons. We also discuss the unit themes and all of the exciting content you can look forward to this summer!

Keeping Youth Engaged This Summer

Youth development programs are serving youth using a mix of approaches this summer, including in-person, virtually, or take-home activities. Regardless of the approach, programming will be most effective when positive youth development is practiced. This webinar addresses a range of practices and tips for ensuring that your programming is engaging and fun. We discuss how to use the new Summer Activity Guide and other resources in order to effectively engage with youth through different delivery models. We discuss ideas for modifying in-person programming to ensure the health and safety of your youth. Lastly, we cover tips and tools for driving youth engagement through virtual programming and address ideas for maintaining consistent connections with youth through digital programming and take-home programming.
